Building South Africa’s digital future starts in the classroom

As South Africa marks National Coding Week (14–20 September) and Education Technology Day (23 September), the spotlight is on an increasingly important question: Do young people have the digital skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing economy?

Technology is transforming how businesses operate and how people work, making digital literacy, problem-solving, and adaptability increasingly valuable skills. In South Africa, youth unemployment and the need to prepare young people for future opportunities remain pressing challenges. Giving learners meaningful exposure to technology can play an important role in building a more digitally capable workforce.

“South Africa has an opportunity to equip young people with the skills to not only participate in the digital economy, but to help shape it,” said Romanus Prabhu Raymond, director of technology at ManageEngine. “Coding encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and a willingness to experiment; skills that extend far beyond technology careers. When combined with accessible education technology, we can create learning environments that give young people the confidence to engage with technology as creators and innovators, rather than simply as consumers.”

Education technology can help make these skills more accessible through interactive and practical learning experiences. Coding is about more than learning a programming language. It develops logical thinking, creativity and problem-solving. By investing in digital capabilities early, South Africa can help its young people become better equipped for the evolving world of work and contribute meaningfully to the country’s digital future.
