Google Gemini Powers South Africa’s First AI-Assisted Braai Challenge

South Africa’s beloved braai tradition has long reflected an unspoken division of roles, with men typically tending the fire while women handle the preparation in the kitchen. In the spirit of International Women’s Day, Google set out to challenge that norm by putting the braai tongs in women’s hands. Through the Gemini Braai Challenge, 25 women creators took full charge of the fire, the flavours and the final dishes — with Gemini serving as their AI co-pilot.

Hosted by popular chef and creator Matlhogonolo Ledwaba at The Breadbox Bakery & Studio – a small business dedicated to empowering women through culinary skills – the event transformed the traditional fire-pit into a high-tech kitchen. Guided by Gemini, Google’s most advanced, multimodal AI model, 25 of South Africa’s leading lifestyle and food creators  “flipped the script” on heritage, proving that the future of flavour is female-led and tech-enhanced.

The afternoon became a celebration of modern South African culture. Set against the aromas of AI-inspired dishes, from sosaties, marinated meat with fresh salads, and traditional pap served with chakalaka — the gathering evolved beyond a simple cookout. It became a sensory showcase of how the timeless ritual of cooking over fire can intersect with the possibilities of digital innovation.

The challenge put women in charge of the entire experience, from fire management to flavour innovation. Throughout the day, teams of creators tapped into Gemini prompts to inspire their dishes, name their teams, troubleshoot sauces on the fly, and craft content for social and mini podcast recordings at The Gemini Diary Corner. The activation demonstrated how Gemini works as a practical digital sous chef – turning complex ideas into actionable steps in real-time.

Empowering the next generation of creators

“South Africans know that the braai isn’t just about a meal: it’s about who gets the honour of ‘owning’ the fire that feeds friends, family and weekend memories,” said Kabelo Makwane, Country Director, Google South Africa. “With this challenge, we’ve placed the tongs in women’s hands and backed them with AI that can keep up with their ideas. Gemini helped them plan, experiment and improvise in the moment. There’s no better place to prove the power of collaboration than at a proudly South African braai.”

With a combined social media reach of 2,673,200 millions across Instagram and TikTok, the participating creators,  including Fikile Zulu (also known as @maidtocook), Mrs Domonique Bullok (known on socials as @deemrsbee) and many more– documented every “resourceful pivot” and culinary win.

The event doubled as a storytelling moment and served as a powerhouse for content, featuring The Gemini Diary Corner. The dedicated studio space captured creators’ unfiltered experiences and personal reflections in their own words, turning the braai into a canvas for empowerment, experimentation and culture.
