AI-Impact Talk: The Evolution of Process Automation with Rudolph Janse van Rensburg

In another insightful episode of AI-Impact Talk, host Thembekile Mrototo delves into the world of Agentic Process Automation (APA) with Rudolph Janse van Rensburg, CEO of 1AI. The conversation explores how this emerging technology is transforming business operations across various industries.

Janse van Rensburg explains that APA represents the evolution of Robotic Process Automation (RPA), incorporating AI agents to augment both human capabilities and traditional automation systems. “It’s using or leveraging all the new AI toys that we’ve all been used to now,” he explains, referring to technologies like large language models that have become increasingly familiar to the public.

Unlike traditional RPA, which focuses on rules-based, repetitive tasks, APA enables more sophisticated decision-making processes. As Janse van Rensburg illustrates, AI agents can now interpret customer queries in ways previously requiring human intervention—understanding what customers are asking for and routing inquiries appropriately. This shift allows businesses to automate not just manual tasks but also aspects of decision-making that once required human judgment.

The discussion highlights how APA platforms have significantly lowered the barriers to entry for implementing AI solutions. Where previously only large corporations like banks and insurance companies could afford significant AI investments, these technologies are now accessible to a broader range of businesses. Janse van Rensburg notes that the platforms have become remarkably user-friendly, allowing subject matter experts to build AI agents using natural language rather than programming code.

A critical aspect of successful APA implementation, according to Janse van Rensburg, is effective collaboration between technical teams and subject matter experts. “I can’t walk into a company and pretend I can do the job better than the subject matter expert that’s sitting there,” he acknowledges, emphasizing the importance of involving the people whose work is being augmented in the development process.

The conversation also addresses concerns around workforce transitions and upskilling. Janse van Rensburg stresses that incentives are key to encouraging employees to embrace new technologies: “If you want them to do their best work, then you have to give the opportunities of upskilling, but there needs to be an incentive linked to that.” He observes that while older generations might be more motivated by financial incentives, younger workers often prioritize work-life balance and improved employee experience.

When discussing international differences, Janse van Rensburg shares insights from his company’s expansion into European markets. He notes cultural contrasts in approach—European businesses tend to spend more time planning and preparing before implementation, while South African companies are often more willing to take risks and implement solutions more spontaneously.

On the topic of ethics and data security, Janse van Rensburg reassures that reputable APA platforms maintain strong cybersecurity certifications and keep organizational data segregated. “The data that you use to train the agents never leaves your organization,” he emphasizes, addressing a common concern about AI implementations.

Looking to the future, Janse van Rensburg expects AI technologies to become increasingly prevalent as organizations witness successful implementations in the market. When asked what AI means to him personally, he shares, “We’re very passionate about solving our customers’ problems, and this just helps me and my company to solve more problems… There’s a lot of satisfaction from watching a customer thrive because of a problem that you solved for them.”

Throughout the conversation, Mrototo guides the discussion with thoughtful questions that illuminate both the technical aspects of APA and its broader implications for businesses navigating digital transformation—continuing the show’s tradition of making complex AI concepts accessible to a wide audience.
