AI-Enabled Fraud Is Already Hitting SA and Financial Institutions Are Running Out of Time

Criminals are exploiting synthetic voices and identities faster than institutions can respond.

Artificial intelligence-enabled fraud is no longer a future risk for South Africa’s financial and
insurance sector; it is already unfolding at scale, with criminals using deepfake voices, synthetic identities and AI-generated content to bypass traditional security systems.

According to TransUnion Africa, South Africa has seen a 1 200% increase in deepfake-linked scams over the past year, with impersonation-based attacks, including AI-generated phishing, WhatsApp scams and voice cloning are now among the fastest-growing threats facing the financial system, contributing to fraud losses already measured in the tens of billions of rand annually.

Globally, the threat is accelerating rapidly. Data from Signicat shows that deepfake-enabled
fraud attempts have surged by more than 2 100% in three years, while industry analysis
estimates that financial-sector losses already exceeded US$200 million in early 2025, with
global AI-driven fraud projected to reach US$40 billion by 2027.

South Africa is not insulated from these dynamics. Nedbank recently issued a public warning after a fraudulent deepfake video and paid social media advertisement circulated online falsely depicting its chief executive, Jason Quinn, promoting a fake investment product. In a separate incident, Woolworths was drawn into an organised scam in which AI-generated content and fake Facebook profiles promoted non-existent “discount meat boxes”.

Fraud Has Shifted From Hacking Systems to Impersonating Humans
According to Certified AI Access, a local specialist focused on AI trust and deepfake protection, the nature of fraud itself has fundamentally changed.

Criminals are no longer trying to break into systems, they’re impersonating people,” says
Matthew Renirie, CEO and co-founder of Certified AI Access. “That shift renders many
traditional controls ineffective, because they were built for a world where voices, faces and
identities could be assumed to be real.”

Banks and insurers still rely on controls such as KYC checks, call-backs and biometrics,
systems not designed to detect synthetic voices or AI-generated impersonation. “What we’re seeing is a structural shift in fraud risk,” Renirie says.

Speed Is Now the Core Risk
Renirie notes that what makes AI-enabled fraud especially dangerous is speed. “Deepfake
content can be generated and deployed in minutes, while organisational responses remain
slow. Detection needs to operate at machine speed, not human speed,” he adds.

He warns that South Africa faces a growing credibility gap: high AI adoption across financial services, fragmented regulation, and limited institutional understanding of how synthetic threats behave in real operational environments.

Deepfake Detection Moves From ‘Nice-to-Have’ to Infrastructure
As a result, real-time deepfake detection is increasingly being viewed as foundational
infrastructure for enterprise fraud prevention, rather than an optional security layer.

“Technology alone doesn’t solve this problem,” says Renirie. “What institutions need is trust
infrastructure, a standard for how AI risk is governed, detected and managed across the
organisation.” With AI-enabled fraud campaigns becoming more frequent, automated and convincing, Certified AI Access cautions that delays in implementation are themselves a growing risk.

“Regulation will come, but fraud is moving faster than policy,” Renirie says. “As AI reshapes
financial crime, trust can no longer be assumed, it must be engineered, at speed.
