How Small Business Owners Can Maintain Positive Wellbeing

Wellbeing is a key factor in business growth and success, especially for entrepreneurs navigating the often-lonely path of self-employment. While being your own boss comes with numerous advantages, it also brings unique challenges—late nights filled with paperwork, managing cash flow, overseeing staff, and constantly problem-solving to sustain the growth of a small business.

According to Xero’s Global State Of Small Business Owner Wellbeing report, South African small business owners experience relatively high levels of wellbeing compared to other countries. However, they still face unique challenges and can embrace strategies to maintain good wellbeing.

Building a strong support network is a powerful strategy to enhance mental wellness. Such a network might include mentors, peers, mental health professionals, and even family and friends. Each group plays a distinct role in providing the emotional and practical support needed to navigate the complexities of running a business.

Here are some practical steps to foster positive wellbeing as a small business owner:

    1. Adopt a growth mindset:

Cultivating a growth mindset focused on lifelong learning and development rather than just outcomes can make daily work more fulfilling. This might include pursuing online courses or hands-on business training in areas like digital marketing or social media. It’s equally important to explore hobbies that spark creativity, such as art or meditation, to keep your mind refreshed.

    2. Leverage automation to create more time for your passion:
One of the main challenges for business owners is finding the time for learning and personal development amid their busy schedules. Automating time-consuming tasks with technology can free up time and energy, allowing you to focus on the aspects of the business that you’re truly passionate about.

    3. Redefine your role:
Many small business owners juggle multiple roles because hiring talent is both challenging and costly. However, being a business owner gives you the freedom to craft your own job description. Flexibility and freedom are often the very reasons people start their own businesses in the first place. Don’t hesitate to ask for help and remember to lean on your community – you don’t have to do it all alone.

    4. Invest time in building community:
Further to my previous point, small business owners must look for opportunities to network and connect with their broader small business community—whether it’s other local businesses, accountants, business coaches, or customers. Connecting with others can inspire and reignite your passion for the business. Listening to and sharing experiences with peers can also introduce new perspectives and innovative ways of doing things.

    5. Schedule time to rest and recharge:
As resilient as South Africans are, with the constant juggling of changes, challenges, and opportunities, it’s easy for small business owners to feel overwhelmed. Scheduling regular downtime to rest and check in with yourself is crucial for staying connected to the passion that drives your business.

By implementing these strategies, small business owners can create positive, supportive environments where everyone can thrive. At Xero, we believe mental wellness is foundational to sustainable business growth. Let’s prioritise our well-being and support each other on this journey toward success.
