As technology continues to reshape how South Africans create, communicate and build businesses online, the country’s digital creator community will gather in Rosebank on Saturday, 22 August, for the Openserve South African Social Media Awards (SASMA) 2026 Nominee Announcement Ceremony.
The exclusive event will reveal this year’s nominees and bring together content creators, digital innovators, media personalities, brands and industry leaders operating at the intersection of technology, media and South Africa’s growing creator economy.
Technology, Creativity and a Changing Digital Economy
Social media has evolved beyond a space for content and entertainment. For a growing number of South Africans, digital platforms have become tools for entrepreneurship, brand building, community development and economic participation.
This changing landscape provides the backdrop for the 2026 Openserve SASMA Awards, which recognise creators, brands and organisations shaping conversations and influencing culture through digital content and social media.
This year also marks a new chapter for the awards, with Openserve joining as Headline Partner. The partnership reflects a shared focus on connectivity, digital innovation and the continued development of South Africa’s creative and digital industries.
Running under the theme “Culture in Motion,” the Nominee Announcement Ceremony will reveal shortlisted creators, brands, entrepreneurs, storytellers and digital innovators competing across this year’s categories.
Recognising a New Generation of Digital Influence
The finalists were selected through an adjudication process conducted by an independent panel of respected industry experts, following submissions received from across South Africa.
A SASMA spokesperson said the continued development of the creator economy demonstrates how digital influence is increasingly translating into cultural and economic value.
“South Africa’s creator economy has evolved into a powerful cultural and economic force. This year’s nominees reflect the diversity, creativity and entrepreneurial energy shaping how South Africans communicate, build communities and create value online. SASMA exists to recognise that impact and give the people behind it the national platform they deserve.”
The rise of South Africa’s creator economy also reflects a broader shift in the relationship between technology and creativity. Digital platforms and increasingly sophisticated content tools are changing how creators produce and distribute content, engage audiences and turn online communities into sustainable brands and businesses.
While artificial intelligence is becoming part of this wider technology landscape, particularly in areas such as content production, audience insights and digital marketing, the human ability to build trust, understand culture and create meaningful connections with audiences remains central to influence.
Connectivity Behind the Creator Economy
The role of connectivity is equally important. Creators and digital entrepreneurs depend on reliable access to digital infrastructure to produce content, reach audiences and participate in an increasingly connected economy.
Openserve’s involvement as Headline Partner therefore places connectivity alongside creativity and innovation as part of the broader conversation around the future of South Africa’s digital economy.
The Nominee Announcement Ceremony begins the countdown to the Openserve SASMA Awards 2026, where winners across all categories will be honoured on 21 November 2026.
Organisers have thanked the judges, sponsors, partners, entrants and supporters whose involvement has helped establish SASMA as a platform for recognising excellence across South Africa’s social media and digital ecosystem.
